Look at how businesses were originally built, with one person at the top, hierarchy more important than relationships, and a relentless focus on hitting hard targets and numbers. Don’t feel your way there, use force over feeling: decide, execute, repeat. I’m feeling stressed just writing this!

But women don’t have to build like that. We build in circles. We check in and read the room before we read the numbers. We make decisions with our gut, our relationships and our sense of what’s actually true right now, not just what the spreadsheet says.

And there’s another fundamental difference: much of the traditional model of business was built around the assumption that someone else was doing the caring, whereas women are often building businesses while still doing much of the caring themselves. Men were able to build businesses with someone else holding up huge parts of life around them. Women have always known the power of building in villages.

It’s a different operating system entirely.

So when a woman tries to run her business through a model built around hierarchy, force and doing it all alone, of course it feels hard. She’s trying to run village logic through a lone-wolf machine, using a model that doesn’t account for how she actually wants to lead, create, live or succeed.
